The disease will most likely impose a \u201cnew normal\u201d when it comes to many aspects of life, especially the way we interact and do business. The restrictions placed on us by governments and ourselves to prevent contracting and spreading the disease have altered centuries of human socialization. Businesses looking to thrive during and after the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0outbreak<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will need to adapt to a new retail environment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Retail experts predict that the new retail environment\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">emerging<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from the coronavirus pandemic will be one that is much leaner with fewer stores \u2013 investment pundit Jim Cramer has suggested big box retail will have just<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/03\/20\/cramer-us-could-end-up-with-three-retailers-amazon-walmart-costco.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">three\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">retail stores<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013 and new shopping behaviors to which independent retailers will have to adapt.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Not All Gloom and Doom &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Not All Gloom and Doom\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The retail shutdown hasn\u2019t exactly been\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">equitable. The calls for all \u201cnon-essential\u201d businesses to close have often left business owners to decide for themselves if their store is \u201cessential\u201d or not. It would seem all businesses are essential to those who own them and depend on them to pay their bills and buy their \u201cessential\u201d goods and services.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Most governmental entities \u2013 federal, state<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and local \u2013 have used their own judgement to determine which are essential businesses, landing on basics like food, healthcare and pharmacies, and shelter \u2013 which has included everything from hardware and LBM retailers to essential construction companies. And while\u00a0the majority of\u00a0non-essential businesses have closed, by both the foresight of their owners or by governmental edict, many of those essential businesses have flourished.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing from our clients is that either they\u2019re doing well, holding their own, or are either struggling or closed as a non-essential business. Some of them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0tell<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0us their businesses are booming,\u201d says Jeff Rogers,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">arketing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ales and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">artnerships<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">irector<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for Paladin Data Corporation. Paladin provides software and hardware solutions for the hardware and LBM, pharmaceutical and general retail industries. \u201cTightwads Discount Building Supply\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(a hardware and LBM store in rural Prineville, Oregon)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their business is up 70% with many people using the stay-at-home orders to do home repair projects.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In a report from\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hardware Retailing<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Eric\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hassett<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who owns five\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hassett<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Hardware stores in the San Francisco Bay Area, reflects similar success with his sales increasing 71% the week after California Gov. Gavin Newsom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0issued his shelter-in-place order.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0In April, Ace Hardware announced it was looking to hire 30,000 new associates. Tract<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or Supply disclosed profits for the first quarter of 2020 were up 7.5% and that is was hiring 5,000 workers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Likewise, pharmacies are busier than usual. On the front line of any health emergency, large retail pharmacies are hiring when other industries are laying off. CVS announced recently it needed to immediately fill 50,000 full- and part-time positions. Walgreens is seeking 9,500 new workers. Making an online sale is the first step, but retail businesses\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">need additional tools<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, both d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">igital and physical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to fulfill those transactions.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The use of programs such as BOPIS<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(Buy Online Purchas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e in Store)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0delivery options were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0already trending b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">efore the COVID-19 virus began sweeping the globe.
