Remember \u201c2001: A Space Odyssey?\u201d and its\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">devious<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> computer HAL? How about \u201cThe Terminator\u201d series which told us machines &#8211; Skynet &#8211; would take over the world? Even lighter films like \u201cWar Games\u201d taught us not to mess with tech or it would follow us around like a \u201cChuckie\u201d doll. It seems many people who grew up watching those movies have gone into retail sales and still have an inherent fear of retail technology. As FDR famously said: \u201cWe have nothing to fear except fear itself.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A study released in January 2019 by market research company<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SSRS indicates that 42% of small business owners admit they don\u2019t use retail technology to its full capacity. Thirteen percent of the study group said \u201cwe do not use any technology\u201d in their business on a weekly basis. And 10% said they limit the use of it because \u201cthey are just busy getting the job done each day.\u201d Trusting retail technology, however, can make doing those jobs easier, more efficient and more accurate.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Technical Evolution, Not Revolution &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Technical Evolution, Not Revolution\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An examination of what types of retail technology businesses are buying, and how much they\u2019re buying, reflects a large trust issue.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Total Retail\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytotalretail.com\/article\/total-retails-2019-retail-technology-report-omnichannel-technology-spending-on-the-rise\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c2018-2019 Retail Technology Report\u201d<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0released in January 2019, shows that even though the retail industry is continuing its digital evolution, in many respects it\u2019s moving about the same speed as natural evolution which isn\u2019t exactly fast. Most respondents \u2013 37% \u2013 said they did not plan on investing anything on emerging technologies in the following 12 months.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not investing in emerging technologies\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mobile apps, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), marketing automation, dynamic digital signage, and augmented reality (AR) \u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">doesn\u2019t mean they aren\u2019t buying or updating their retail technology, though. Well-established tech solutions \u2013 point of sale systems (POS), e-commerce platforms and analytics \u2013 are the leading retail technology investments and, not surprisingly, are the three technologies at the top of the list in terms of current use. E-commerce platforms are in use by 57% of the survey respondents, 49% rely on a POS, and 45% use\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">some kind of analytics<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Inventory management software, very often part of a retail platform, was fourth on the list with 40%.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All four of these\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">digital\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">solutions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0back-office<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">labor, time and cost-saving<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0tools that have\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">measurable return on investment (ROI)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Not surprisingly,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">store owners more easily trust\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">established,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tried-and-true<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Let\u2019s face it: Back-office\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">retail\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">technology just makes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">doing business\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">easier.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Back-End Tech &#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.22.0&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; use_border_color=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Back-End Tech<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Learning to trust technology is often a result of simply using it regularly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ross Martin, who owns Caledonia Village Ace Hardware in Caledonia, Michigan, uses Paladin Data Corporation\u2019s retail technology to keep the right mix and optimum quantities of products in stock. One of the system\u2019s features, Suggested Ordering, uses sale transaction data and analytic algorithms to eliminate hours of price shopping and automatically generate inventory orders to maintain the ideal amount of stock on hand. Using it has helped the store achieve an in-stock percentage of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">approximately<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a098%, which Ross says helped him earn Ace Pinnacle status as a top-performing store two years in a row.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur store uses Suggested Ordering 100%. Ace considers 95% really good and we\u2019re always above that,\u201d he says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dave Billman simplified his life in his store, Clinton Hardware in Clinton, Massachusetts, just by using retail technology he researched and purchased. He says mapping his store with location codes and trusting his Suggested Ordering reports has allowed him to eliminate inventory that doesn\u2019t sell and replace them with items that do. Much of the emerging technology is customer-facing. And its development has been driven by brick-and-mortar retail\u2019s desire to enhance the in-store shopping experience and compete with the virtual toys e-commerce offers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The National Retail Federation (NRF) recently surveyed consumers to gauge their expectations of and satisfaction with retail technology.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/about-us\/nrf-staff\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Katie Jordan<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, NRF manager of Research and Industry Insights, writes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in her blog\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that retail technology both in-store and online has improved the shopping experience.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cToday\u2019s shoppers expect innovation from retailers, particularly millennials. Consumers find it important that brands offer technology throughout the shopping journey, particularly when it comes to taking the guesswork out of the pre-purchase experience. Millennials across the board are the most likely to say it\u2019s important that retailers offer innovation or technology that helps them shop,\u201d Jordan s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ays<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Much of the front-end retail technology involves creating cohesive, cross-channel marketing and product offerings often called \u201comnichannel.\u201d The channels involve the in-store and online marketing, shopping<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and sales experiences that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work together in both<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0digital and brick-and-mortar stores. Those numbers are spread across the generations, too.\u00a0Shopkick, a company that creates shopping apps for mobile devices, conducted a recent survey that shows that 55% of Generation Z shoppers \u2013 those born between 1996 and 2010 (the generation following millennials) \u2013 indicated they would do\u00a0the majority of\u00a0their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oliday shopping in stores.
